YACHTING

Say goodbye to soot on deck, diesel residue in the water and unpleasant odours from diesel engines on the aft deck. The installation of Xeamos’ successful Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) systems offers many benefits for owners and the environment.

But what is soot, exactly? Soot, or particulate mass, is a collection of carbon particles, hydrocarbons, ash residue from lubricating oil, fuel and wear particles from the engine. Depending on their size, these particles can enter the lungs through inhalation, while the smallest and most dangerous particles may even enter the blood stream.

Why soot filters on yachts are crucial
The benefits of reducing soot, oil residue and fumes to help preserve a cleaner paintwork and deck, prevent water pollution and improve the health of guests and crew alike are obvious. In addition, reducing hydrocarbons can get rid of that ubiquitous diesel smell onboard. This is especially important in the beach club relaxation areas on a yacht, which are usually located on the lower deck.

A major focal point when choosing a soot filter unit is that yacht generators often have long periods of low loads. This means they require active regeneration by a filter with a burner system that periodically increases the temperature of the emissions to clean the soot filters. For smaller generators, Xeamos also has soot filter systems with electric regeneration, and we can custom-install all our systems on both new builds or as part of a refit.

Why partner with Xeamos

While Xeamos may not be the largest supplier of yachtbuilding systems, it’s certainly among the most flexible. We can supply integrated solutions for a soot filter system and SCR catalyst, and include a silencer. We are happy to adapt sizes and connections to the engine at hand, and provide bespoke solutions for the controls, including a wide variety of connections to all types of parent monitoring system.

Our soot filters provide a modulating electric load bank that ensures a more effective load on the generator. This saves on fuel consumption compared to a diesel burner and, with no additional compressor needed, Xeamos systems are easy to install as part of a refit. Moreover, our soot filters can be used for a sulphur level of up to 1000 ppm (parts per million) where others only allow for up to 20 ppm. With a wide range of coatings available, we can even actively regenerate very ‘cold’ running engines or engines with a very low load, and the flexibility of our E-heater programme allows us to offer different voltages.

Rooted in engineering

Xeamos is an engineering firm and all our systems are developed and tested in-house. We also provide expertise in the fields of noise attenuation, soot filters and SCR technology, ensuring that everything is seamlessly combined within a single system. If necessary, we can also calculate the pressure drop of the entire exhaust system and perform thermal and/or strength calculations. Our team is always up-to-date with the latest regulations in the areas of emissions, safety and other related issues. In a nutshell, Xeamos can provide you with a system that has a guaranteed lifespan and guaranteed operational security.

Examples of Xeamos systems for PM reduction

Our systems are unique in the way they are fully aligned to each application. This means they are meticulously adapted to the type of engine and its load profile, fuel type, available space, and the specific demands of the user. This is why Xeamos supplies an extensive range of systems instead of a single standard system for multiple applications.

The components we use are of the highest industrial quality. While we may not be the cheapest, working with Xeamos means fully recovering the costs of your investment in the long term via low operational and replacement costs.

As a reference point, here are the specs of two Xeamos PM reduction systems, the Zero Soot-EHS and Zero Soot-FB.
