Xeamos and Sustainable Shipping: Clean, Green and Ahead of the Curve
Following the EU’s announcement of its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 to combat the ongoing existential threat of climate change, it is no surprise that focus has turned on international shipping for the significant part it has to play in reducing global emissions.
As cited in an article published in July in the Dutch media, the 174 member countries of the United Nations’ International Maritime Organisation (IMO) recently reached an agreement through which ships must emit 70% less CO2 by 2040, with a global climate tax on fuel for ships also expected to be introduced by 2027.
In order to reach these ambitious targets, seagoing vessels will be obligated to switch from fossil fuel oil to cleaner synthetic fuels over the coming decades – including HVO, liquefied gas (LNG), or hydrogen-based fuels such as ammonia and methanol.
Although the climate action targets cited above have the somewhat distant year of 2050 in their sights, Xeamos has been committed to helping shipping become more sustainable right from our inception. As an acknowledged market leader in exhaust emission reduction solutions and with 25 years of experience under our belt, our ambitious team has been making waves in the field of NOx and soot reduction from day one, helping our clients contribute to creating a better environment, in both shipping and beyond.
Notably, despite the fact that alternative fuels are cleaner, from an environmental perspective, exhaust after-treatment may be required in order to fulfil the legal emissions requirements. Of course, this will depend on the chosen fuel type, as well as the engine configuration.
Alongside our technical know-how and commitment to research and development, at Xeamos, we also ensure that we closely follow and stay to up to speed with all changes in international regulations in sustainability. Indeed, we are proud of our team of specialists in this area, with our clients able to leverage our comprehensive understanding of the relevant laws and emissions regulations at a local, regional, European and international level.
